Farmers' Market Goodness

Although I do my part helping out a certain farmers' market, I visited another farmers' market today to pick up some local fruit and veg! I left with a tummy full of wood-fired pizza and lemonade, and a bag full of local strawberries, radishes, garlic scapes, romaine lettuce and Asian greens! I love the atmosphere at farmers' markets; everyone is always in such a good mood, little kids are getting turned onto new foods and you might even run into a cute farmer intern while you're shopping! Farmers' markets: what's not to like?

Green Breakfast Smoothie

In an attempt to be as healthy as possible, I've decided to implement the morning green drink routine into my lifestyle. With inspiration from Fresh, Your Joyologist, and my recent viewing of Forks Over Knives, I figured it was about time I take the plunge. But, which green powder to choose? What is it actually going to do for me health-wise, and how bad is this green powder actually going to taste?

So, I took a trip to the Natural Food Pantry in my neighbourhood, talked to the friendly, knowledgeable staff there and picked up some good old fashioned Greens Plus. Once back home, I blended up a teaspoon of Greens Plus powder, a handful of strawberries, a few slices of kiwi, one ripe banana, a drizzle of honey and some almond milk. As I took the first sip I did notice the unfamiliar taste of the green powder that I am not used to, but for the most part it was a sweet, fruity and delicious green smoothie!

My intent is to try a bunch of different "green drink" recipes in order to find a few favourites that I can make every morning. The word on the street on green powder is that it automatically gives you all the greens and herbs you need on a daily basis, it provides many antioxidants and vitamins, helps your digestive and immune systems and also detoxifies the blood. I've also heard it gives you more energy and healthier, more glowing skin! The employee in the store said it's like eating three or four large green salads a day as far as getting your green nutrients.

So, bring it on, green powder! We are going to be friends :)

Food Films: Forks Over Knives

I can't wait to see this movie!

Every time you turn around these days, there's a new "food-umentary" on the scene. Forks Over Knives is the newest one on my radar and I'm looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.

If you've been reading After the Harvest for a while you may already know that I tend to "flirt" with vegetarianism and for the most part I eat a largely plant-based diet. I still struggle with the concept of going completely vegetarian or even vegan, but with each passing day my feet tend to shuffle in that direction more and more. My largest barriers to this are my loves of cheese, eggs, fish and Greek yogurt. I tend to subscribe to the Michael Pollan way of eating, and I like to support farmers and food producers who raise animals humanely and naturally.

My vegetarian waffling aside, Forks Over Knives does not strike me as a film strictly for vegetarians or vegans. If anything, I think more meat eaters should consider checking out this documentary. Based on the trailers I've seen, Forks Over Knives seems to speak largely to the connection between food and health, and how vital that is in our lives.

Whether or not you eat animal products, I think we can all agree that the more plant-based food we eat, the healthier we will be.

Quick and Easy Mediterranean-Inspired Meal

Just a quick meal I whipped up with a Mediterranean feel -- anything with tomatoes and really good olive oil has my vote! Veggies local to Canada (greenhouse) but not "local" as it's clearly not tomato season yet!

No recipe required: Salad with Raincoast tuna (canned yet sustainable!), splash of olive oil and lemon juice. Quinoa tossed with tomatoes cooked in olive oil! Served with a nice Baco Noir (Peller Estates), chilled to perfection. Ahh, summer. I will be sharing more meals and recipes this summer, so stay tuned!
